If Australian states were countries

Est Reading Time: 2 min

There’s been quite a few interesting maps imagining states of a particular country as countries of their own. Some examples:

Australia has states but somehow doesn’t get the same level of attention! Luckily we have fewer states/territories so I made some.

Australian states/territories as countries – by size

Australian states/territories as countries – by population

Australian states/territories as countries – by population density

Yep, everywhere except VIC, TAS & ACT are possibly least densely populated places on earth. Greenland was the closest to NT but is in a league of its own, with 10 times fewer people per km than even the runner up.

Australian states/territories as countries – by GDP

Australian states/territories as countries – by life expectancy for men (non-indigenous/indigenous)

Ok so there were only 4 states that I could find full data for but I think it’s a very stark illustration of the state of play. Note that NT’s GDP per person is equivalent to Norway’s. So Botswana has a similar life expectancy for men as indigenous NT residents despite its average GDP per person being 12 times lower. Of course if there was data about the equivalent of GDP for just indigenous Australians it would probably be similar.

Australian states/territories as countries – by life expectancy for women (non-indigenous/indigenous)

Note that Bhutan, Burma and North Korea all have some sort of political and economic isolation from the outside world and hence don’t have as much access to the international health system infrastructure as even their neighbours that are less closed.

It would be really good if people paid attention to the above 2 maps especially.
